How Hong Kong Mahjong scoring works

Winning patterns contribute faan, while the hand's shape and table context determine which patterns apply. The Official Hong Kong mode uses a configured minimum-faan check before treating a completed hand as a qualifying win.

Structure and context both matter

Chow, Pung, and Kong groups can be entered as open or closed, alongside the pair. Self-draw and discard wins use different payment movement, and seat wind, prevailing wind, and dealer context provide the surrounding table details.

Faan becomes the payment result

The calculator shows the recognized scoring patterns, faan total, qualification status, and final player-to-player payment lines. Flowers and Seasons can contribute where the selected rules allow them.

Minimum faan is a table rule

In the Official Hong Kong mode, a winning hand must meet the required minimum faan before it qualifies. The official default is 3 faan, and the calculator shows when a complete hand is below that threshold.
