Why Taiwanese Mahjong uses more tiles

Taiwanese Mahjong is commonly played with 16 tiles in hand. The winning tile brings a completed standard hand to 17 normal tiles, rather than the 14-tile finish common in Riichi, MCR, and Hong Kong Mahjong.

Five groups and a pair

A standard Taiwanese win uses five valid groups—Chow, Pung, or Kong—plus one pair. The calculator's grouped hand builder keeps those five set slots and the pair explicit while preserving each group's open or closed state.

Do not lose the winning tile

Enter the completed 17-tile structure exactly as it stood when the hand was won. Flowers and Seasons are tracked separately from the normal-tile count.

How Taiwanese Mahjong scoring works

Taiwanese scoring is commonly counted in Tai. Supported hand patterns and table conditions add Tai, while the win method, seat and prevailing winds, dealer context, Flowers / Seasons, and Kong-related winning circumstances provide the surrounding detail.

Tai values depend on the rules profile

Taiwanese Mahjong is not one universal house system. Tai values, flower treatment, Kong rules, dealer rules, minimum Tai, and payment formulas can differ between tables. 13 Orphans provides an Official Taiwanese profile and configurable Custom Taiwanese rules for compatible table variations.

Minimum Tai is not universal

The standalone Official Taiwanese calculator reports the supported Tai total rather than imposing one universal minimum-Tai gate. Custom Taiwanese profiles can configure a minimum Tai when a table requires one.

Payment is a table-rule estimate

When enabled, the calculator can show an optional payment estimate using points per Tai, base payment, and dealer adjustments. Treat those values as the selected table's estimate, not a universal Taiwanese formula.

Flowers and Seasons stay visible

Flowers and Seasons are entered separately, and supported seat-matching Flower or Season bonuses can contribute Tai according to the active profile.
