The scoring foundation

How Riichi Mahjong scoring works

A winning hand needs a legal shape and at least one yaku, the scoring pattern that makes the hand eligible. From there, the result combines the hand's han and fu with the table context.

Han and fu answer different questions

Han measures scoring value from yaku and applicable bonuses such as dora. Fu captures structural minipoints where they apply, including features of the hand and winning wait. The resulting score is rounded according to Riichi scoring rules.

Context changes the payment

Ron is a win on another player's discard; tsumo is a self-draw and distributes payment among the table. Dealer status changes the payment amounts, and the selected seat wind, round wind, honba, and riichi sticks provide the surrounding table context.
